FAQ

A: Nope! There are competition levels from walk/trot or walk/jog (for brand new riders) to open flat, fences, and reining (for very experienced riders). If you have an interest in learning to ride and competing on a collegiate level, we would love to have you on our team.

A: The team competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). Shows include Hunt Seat Equitation on the flat, over fences, Western Horsemanship, and Reining. We’re also considering joining the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) which, obviously, competes in dressage.

A: Lessons, show clothes, travel costs, and show fees can add up, but we do our best keep everything reasonable. Entry fees are $25 a class, however students only compete in 1 or 2 classes per show, and some entry fees are covered by the team. The cost of show clothes varies, but we do our best to share extra clothes and find discounts on new and used things. Each lesson is $30, and you’re required to take one lesson a week. More will be explained at our Info meetings.

A: As a team member you’re expected to attend all club meetings as well as additional weekly team meetings during the semester. You must also take at least one lesson a week and put in additional time riding and/or in the gym. You’re required to remain an active club member and complete further fundraising, publicity, social, and barn requirements. Team members also attend all shows and stay for the duration of the show. All requirements will be discussed at future meetings.

A: Nope! While it’s beneficial to have access to a horse to ride all the time, it’s still easy to be on the team without a horse of your own. A matter of fact, a majority of our current team does not own a horse. Since IHSA is all “catch riding” you’re not allowed to show on your horse even if you have one.

A: Absolutely! While caring for a horse and balancing college is a big responsibility, many of our members find it a very rewarding experience. Even though Sonoma State University does not have it’s own facility, our officers will do our best to help you find a great home for your horse!
